Mount View Middle School

As some of you may have read, County Executive Ken Ulman recently convened a commission to examine and provide recommendations on the current structure of the Howard County Board of Education.    One of the concerns seems to be the lack of diverse (geographic, racial, ethnic and gender) representation on the board.   There are those who would like to explore having Board of Education members elected by Districts while there are others who think that having members elected "at large" allows for greater focus on all of the needs of the Howard County Student community.

This is a very important issue and we really need your help and your voice so that everyone within the community has an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas regarding how they would like to see the Board of Education structured so that we can continue to provide the best possible resources and opportunities for our students.

The Howard County School Board Study Commission, headed by Dr. Nancy Grasmick, has announced the following meeting dates and times. Room locations will be forthcoming.

Meeting dates:

Mon. Aug. 22, 7 p.m.

Mon. Aug. 29, 7 p.m.

Thurs., Sept. 8, 7 p.m.

Mon. Sept. 26, 7 p.m.

Public participation:  The commission will reserve time at the conclusion of each meeting for public comment. Additionally, a public hearing will be held of Mon. Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. Location to be announced. Those wishing to submit comments or information electronically are encouraged to do so at schoolboardstudy@howardcountymd.gov

Please share this information with your parents and get the word out regarding the meeting dates so that parents have an opportunity to attend the meetings or submit their comments electronically.  As an organization, the PTA has a powerful voice because of our numbers and now is the time to use our voice to share with the commission what our community members feel about how we currently structure and elect our Board of Education members.   We really need to rally together as an organization to weigh in on this issue.

Just as an FYI, the PTA Council of Howard County has been invited to sit on this commission so you will have representation on this commission.    Thanks in advance for your help and support.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at president@ptachc.org or via phone at (410) 489-9261.

 for every child, one voice,

Chaunfayta Hightower, President
