Mount View Middle School

Community Outreach

2013 - 2014

The Mount View Middle School PTA sponsors a Community Outreach Committee and works with a small group of students, referred to as the Charity’s Angels, to plan several events throughout the year.  These events help raise awareness and support charities in our community and beyond.  Without your support, this amazing group of students could not have accomplished all of the meaningful projects they did.  Take a moment to walk through our year of supporting and giving to others!

MVMS PTA Ice Cream Social supports
the Tanner's Touch Foundation (April)
Many thanks to all the families, staff members and sports teams that came out to support the Tanner's Touch Foundation at the ice cream social (April 23rd 2014)!  We made nearly $600 - that is spectacular!  A special thanks to the School of Rock for providing "rockin" music with such talented students!  Another thank you to the Charity's Angels for all your hard work in preparing and working at the event - you did a great job and we are so proud of you!  The Tanner's Touch Foundation is a non-profit organization developed to raise money for pediatric cancer research and families of children with cancer.  Click HERE to learn more about this amazing charity!

One touch makes a big difference!

Smile Bags (February/March)

Our next goal is to create and fill 50 Smile Bags for Operation Smile!  Operation Smile provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe.   After receiving life-transforming surgery, each child receives a Smile Bag bursting with goodies – including a mirror to see their new smile for the first time - the perfect gift to cheer up a healing child.

 The following items were collected:

  • small shampoo (.85 to 1.4 oz size, screw-on top only)
  • small comb (no rat tails)
  • new wash cloth
  • bar of soap (small hotel size)
  • sample size toothpaste (check expiration date - not expired)
  • child size toothbrush (single package)
  • small stuffed animal (Beanie Baby® size)
  • 8 pack box of coloring crayons
  • thin 8.5” x 11” coloring book
  • small square mirror (approximate size 3”x 3”)

Cookies for the Homeless (December)

The Charity's Angels baked cookies to provide a tasty treat for boxed lunches that were delivered to a homeless shelter.  Many thanks to Mrs. Pearce for all her support and letting us use her FACS classroom!

Project Giving Tree (November/December)
The Community Outreach Committee would  like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in Project Giving Tree!  Your generosity provided a family of 8 with clothes, shoes, socks, gift cards, toys and so much more this holiday season.  An extra thank you to Mrs. Parson and the Charity's Angels for promoting, organizing and wrapping your donations.  Way to go Falcons! You did a great job!

Backpack Buddies (ongoing throughout the school year)

This program is ongoing throughout the school year. Nearly every Friday during the academic year, food-filled backpacks are provided to children currently enrolled in Howard County’s Head Start program.  Approximately 250 of the children participating in the program are at or below the poverty line (defined as $23,000 or less annual income, as of September 2013) and, consequently, are considered “food insecure.” Although provided meals during their school day, these children are often left hungry on the weekends.  With the help of this program, Backpack Buddies, the children are provided with backpacks containing food.  These backpacks provide them (and their families) with some nutritional sustenance for the weekend.

Coat Drive (October)

In conjunction with PTACHC, Mount View Middle participated in the annual Coat Drive for Howard County.  Many thanks to all the families that took the time to send in your donations!  We collected over 50 items!  Great job!   Also, thank you to our Charity's Angels for sorting and bagging all donations.

Frequently in life, we are reminded that our actions express so much more than our spoken words.  This is the certainly the case for MVMS’s Community Outreach Committee and their Charity’s Angels.  This year’s journey has been inspiring and serves as a reminder to our students and all who support them, parents and faculty alike, that we all can make a difference from our own backyard to the shores of remote islands around the world.

Look for us next year as we walk through another year of giving.... another year of OUTREACH!
